he wants the new defense secretary to be former republican senator chuck hagel. thankfully, today 15 republican senators demanded the withdrawal of hagel's nomination and it's no wonder. senate republicans have found all sorts of shady associations in hagel's past. for instance, he was once a senate republican. [laughter] and now, according to conservative news anger-gregator breitbart.com, hagel may have taken money from an organization called "friends of hamas." friends of hamas! that's serious! being friends with a muslim terrorist is a big commitment. you've got to be a groomsman in all four of their weddings. i mean, the suicide vest rentals alone! math is getting better for chuck hagel to be confirmed as defense secretary perhaps as early as next week. in a letter, though, 15 republican senators urged for hagel to withdraw his nomination. on that list included marco rubio and ted cruz. it reads in part, while we respect senator hagel's honorable military service, we respectfully request you withdraw his nomination. it would be unprecedented for a secretary of defense to take office without the broad base of bipartisan support and confidence needed to serve effectively in this critical position. ted cruz added, quote, in the last 50 years, no other secretary of defense has been confirmed with more than three members voting against him, and in the entire history of the position, no one has been confirmed with more than 11 no votes, end quote. still, hagel got support from former senator bob dole, who called him an exceptional leader, and senator richard shelby of alabama. it was kind of an underwhelming vote of confidence. shelby said, quote, he's probably as good as we're going to get, end quote. the senate returns from recess

my first reads of the morning. next tuesday the senate will vote on chuck hagel's confirmation and barring any last-minute surprises, hagel will be confirmed. his opponents are running out of time. opponents hoped that bying time with a filibuster would work. the last 24 hours really does feel like a last gasp from opponents who understand he has the vote. senator john cornyn of texas wrote a letter to the president demanding his withdrawal. it's -- without the broad base of bipartisan support and confidence needed to serve effectively. but it's significant that cornen only got 14 other senators to signen and that that's where they were going, begging the president to withdraw hagel. then hoke inhofe said, make no mistake, a vote for cloture and a vote to confirm hagel as secretary of state. translation, don't have the votes anymore to stop this vote from going on. the white house was already just one vote away from breaking the filibuster. licensed graham and john mccain have said they will likely vote -- also yesterday, hagel also picked up another republican for confirmation fro

today. last night we told you about how the conservative website breitbart.com reported that chuck hagel may have financial ties to a group called friends of hamas. we've got a problem here, folks. friends of hamas does not exist, and the story is bogus. yet the folks at breitbart are not only sticking to the report, they're attacking anyone who even questions it. this is the way conservative media operates these days in the business world. worse yet, instead of throwing water on these baseless stories, elected officials are fueling the fire by responding to them. senator rand paul said he found hagel's possible tied to a non-existent group concerning. and earlier this week senator lindsey graham of south carolina demanded that hagel respond to a rumor about him published by another right-wing blog. in both cases the claims had absolutely no merit. yet pushing these stories helped the right-wing media and republican lawmakers further their agenda. smear hagel and undermine ultimately president obama.
